Nine women ascend the steps of Cologne’s Dom Cathedral in exaggeratedly glossy high-platformed gumboots. Each model must be assisted by a Helper, without whom walking is impossible. The participants ascend the steps with increasing precariousness, clustering finally at the cathedral doors with their feet drawn up against the tide.
The boots are humorous and baroque and the question they raise is serious: can only the wealthy adapt to rising waters?
Boots for rising waters range in height from 10 to 30 cm, allowing the wearer to select a height appropriate for the day’s level of flooding.
The work has subsequently been re-performed at Blue Oyster Gallery, Dunedin (2009) and Artereal Gallery, Sydney (2010).
